NBA Booming Ballers, on PredictionStrike
Welcome to March Madness! What’s up, everybody! My name is Jalon Dixon, your friendly neighborhood NBA super fan and new Prediction Strike expert here with the weekly scoop on the biggest news across the association and how these things could influence Prediction Strike’s NBA Stock Market.
To kick things off, let’s look at how my top players to watch from last week have been performing. The New York Knicks are still on a heater as they are 7-3 in their previous ten games on the backs of Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle. Nonetheless, Brunson has taken a slight dip down by -10.25% to $2.89, and so has Randle, down -2.48% to $2.99. Don’t let the percentages fool you. Buy into the Knickerbockers while they’re still hot! But, before we get into the usual run of things... we're running a...

State of the NBA Awards
There are only a few weeks left in the regular season, meaning there isn’t much time left for players across the league to build their case as potential NBA award winners. Not to say that the hierarchy for each award is set in stone, but this late-in-the-game positioning is up to preference, perception, and storylines. With that being the case, here are the current betting odds for MVP, ROY, DPOY, and Most Improved Player according to Vegas Insider and FanDuel Sportsbook:
2023 NBA MVP:
- Joel Embiid +100 ($22.10,
+9.06%)
- Nikola Jokic +160 ($18.20, +9.19)
- Giannis Antetokounmpo +130 ($13.47, +5.86)
- Jayson Tatum +10000 ($20.62,
-0.58%)
- Luka Doncic +50000 ($15.10,
-0.03%)
Despite Jokic leading the pack for most of the season, could the recent slip-up by the Denver Nuggets cause him to hand over his 3rd straight MVP trophy at the buzzer? Perennial runner-up Joel Embiid is leading the league in scoring with 33.5 points per game with the Philadelphia 76ers looking like one of the best teams heading into the postseason. After two back-to-back seasons of coming in second place, this could be the year that Embiid finally takes home the gold.
2023 NBA Rookie of the Year
- Paolo Banchero -7000 ($12.17,
+3.60%)
- Jalen Williams +6000 ($10.49,
+23.56%)
- Walker Kessler +6000 ($4.28,
-0.74%)
- Bennedict Mathurin +6000 ($5.17,
-0.50%)
Orlando Magic rookie phenom Paolo Banchero has been leading the Rookie of the Year race all season long and has not looked back. There was some early buzz for Bennedict Mathurin that made it seem like we could be in for a competitive race. But after lighting the league on fire for the first two months of the year, Mathurin has come down to Earth, leaving Banchero to coast as the undeniable frontrunner for Rookie of the Year.
2023 Defensive Player of the Year
- Brook Lopez -150 ($4.85,
+18.11%)
- Jaren Jackson Jr. +140 ($0.64, -4.02%)
- Bam Adebayo +2700 ($2.82,
-6.45%)
- Giannis Antetokounmpo +3000 ($13.47,
+5.86)
I would have Jaren Jackson Jr. as my leading candidate for DPOY, but honestly, both guys have been jockeying for the top spot all season long. Jackson Jr. is the backbone of the league’s top defense in terms of defensive rating (110.3) and the Grizzlies are also 5th in points allowed (111.9). But the Bucks are no slouch either as they are 3rd in defensive rating (110.7) and 6th in points allowed (112.0). You’re splitting hairs as to who’s the better defender between these two defensive beasts. Meaning this could be an award that could come down to stylistic preference: The athletic block chaser or the roaming paint anchor. Which player would you vote for? Let us know!
2023 Most Improved Player:
- Lauri Markkanen -450 (4.34, +1.40%)
- Shai
Gilgeous-Alexander
+650 (8.98, +4.76%)
- Jalen Brunson +1100 ($2.89,
-10.25%)
- Mikal Bridges +3500 ($15.46,
+4.06)
- Tyrese Haliburton +6500 ($39.31,
-0.25%)
Although the MIP does not get nearly the kind of national attention that the MVP debate does, this may arguably be the controversial award of the season. In a year with so much parity across the league and more than a handful of players having breakout seasons, you could easily list out 8-10 players who are deserving of this award. If I had a vote, I’d go with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who has officially arrived as a top-5 point guard in the league while leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a chance of making the playoffs. Before the start of the season, this was considered another throwaway season for the young Thunder squad after losing their 2023 2nd overall pick Chet Holmgren to a season-ending injury. But rather than chucking up the season, Gilgeous-Alexander has rallied the Thunder to play hard, play together and embrace the underdog role. Nonetheless, MIP will come down to storylines and whose ascension resonates the most with voters. It will be interesting to see who comes out with the trophy because it’s anyone’s to get.
